iKasi Creative paves the road to employment for rural youth

iKasi Creative Media is committed to creating pathways to employment for rural youth in the audio-visual and digital media industry. The film industry is growing in the Garden Route and iKasi graduates from this area are thriving as new opportunities open in George for crew members.

Garden Route Media Productions, a local start-up was recently commissioned to make 5 films for DSTV channel FliekNET. The films are being produced by Marius Wannenburg in the Garden Route area and 6 of the iKasi Skills programme graduates worked on the set!

The films will be flighted on FliekNET towards the end of this year on DSTV.

iKasi Creative encourages youth to stay in their hometowns to nurture their creative talents. Big production centres like Cape Town and Joburg are flooded with work, and young people in rural areas need to know that opportunity exists where they are, in their community. Starting out in a new production company like Garden Route Media is a great example of the employment pipeline iKasi offers its graduates.

Other graduates have started their own production companies,  invested in equipment and are creating content for clients, YouTube channels, or social media.

Garden Route Media Productions is an affiliate company to the Media Box in Johannesburg and is headed up by Marius Wannenburg who has a keen interest and a heart for developing young talent. He has partnered with iKasi since 2018 and is ready to grow his company using youth that come through the iKasi programmes. The crew are all young, ambitious, and living in the Garden Route.

The company has postproduction and studio facilities in George at St Georges Square, and you can visit their website: https://gardenroutemedia.co.za/

The company hopes to continue making made-for-TV films and reality TV content for different platforms and as they grow, they are taking iKasi graduates along with them.

Happy Nani from Worcester

iKasi graduate, Leverne Francis comments on the experience: “Being on set and working with these amazing actors really broadened my understanding and my knowledge when it comes to the art of acting. Each actor showed a different side of how they bring their characters to life, and how they prepare for a specific scene. Working with them and interacting with them really brought a sense of self-worth to the crew members because we got to see and get to know the actors on a more personal level. We don’t see them as characters in a TV show now, we see them as people, that are doing an incredible job by keeping us entertained!”

Some of the actors in the films are Nadia Valvekens from Binnelanders and Alles Malan; DJ Mouton from the film Abraham and Noem my Skollie

iKasi Creative founder Lika Berning directed one of the films – Hart in Bos which was filmed in the small town of Hartenbos. “It has been such a fulfilling experience working with young people that started on our training in 2017. Working with them now in a professional environment is amazing!”

Astrid Kees from Worcester

The editor of all the films is Carlyle Lodewyk, is also a graduate who comes from the small rural town of Rheenendal, close to Knysna. The other crew members who completed with iKasi Creative are Rowan Du Preez, the sound recordist and sound engineer, Make-up, and special effects artist Jovan Clavert, set assistant and continuity LG Calvert, Clapper Loader Leverne Francis, and Ingrid Buys who is the company production manager.

iKasi Creative are grateful to Garden Route Media for their commitment to youth development and would love to partner with other companies who are committed to taking on graduates in their growing businesses.
