South Africans will soon be able to enjoy ‘some of the world’s most beloved stories’ when Disney+ launches in SA!
The Walt Disney Company’s streamer Disney Plus confirmed a 2022 launch across Europe, Africa and West Asia in 42 countries and 11 new territories – including South Africa.
When is Disney+ coming to South Africa?
Disney+ first launched in late 2019 and features most Marvel and Disney movies and series exclusively. From June/July 2022, South African fans can opt-in to watch these movies, for (presumably) around R125 per month.
“With exclusive original content and thousands of episodes and movies from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and general entertainment from Star, Disney+ is the streaming home for some of the world’s most beloved stories,” the company’s press release says.
Streaming Services in South Africa
Amazon Prime Video introduced rand-based pricing in South Africa, many South Africans wonder which streaming service offers the largest number of titles to get the best bang for their buck.
According to MyBroadband, Prime Video offers the largest number of titles among major subscription video streaming services like Netflix and Showmax.
While Showmax offers a variety of local content and original movies and series, Netflix offers people content from all over the world, like their recent number one hit, the Korean drama, Squid game. Prime Video, on the other hand, has a sizeable collection of Bollywood films among many other things in full HD and 4K resolution streaming.
It is reported that Showmax’s best streaming quality available is 720p, while Netflix’s quality varies from SD to 4K resolution depending on which package you have selected.
A VARIETY OF TELEVISION SHOWS
Prime Video offers a selection of 1 113 TV shows, the most popular of which are well-known series such as The Big Bang Theory, House, and Chicago PD.
Similar to Netflix, Prime Video offers a range of original content, dubbed Amazon Originals.
The most notable of these include The Wheel of Time, The Grand Tour, The Boys, The Man in High Castle, and Invincible.
Other popular originals include Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Hanna, Always Jane, Bosch, and Carnival Row.
When it comes to TV shows alone, Amazon Prime Video ranks second in terms of available content, with Netflix offering the largest selection of series and documentaries.
According to JustWatch, Netflix offers a total of 2 042 series while Showmax has 553.
Data for Disney+ will only be available as soon as it launches.
WHAT ABOUT MOVIES?
When it comes to movies, Prime Video offers avid movie fans a large selection of content to watch, though only a few recent blockbusters are available on the streaming platform.
Notable titles include Inglorious Basterds, Mr and Mrs Smith, Gladiator, Catch Me If You Can, Saving Private Ryan, Back To The Future, the Indiana Jones series, and the first Jurassic Park.
In terms of the sheer volume of movie content, Amazon’s streaming service offers a far more extensive selection of films than Netflix and Showmax, with 7 404 movies compared to Netflix’s 3 678 and Showmax’s 1 246.
Disney+ will presumably be more expensive than Showmax and Prime Video, but cheaper than Netflix.
